    Is Online Therapy Effective?

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, clients who were initially seeing their therapist for in-person sessions needed to quickly transition to telehealth (i.e., health care delivery at a distance). So instead of clients participating in traditional therapy delivered face to face in a therapist’s office, clients started participating in virtual therapy, mainly through an online video platform. Although there has been more acceptance and more mainstream use of virtual or online therapy since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the use and evidence for the effectiveness of telehealth for the delivery of mental health services is not new.

According to the American Psychological Association, the practice of researching telemental health, started around 1960, and this research continues today. If you want to read more about some of these studies, The Telehealth Behavioral Health Institute has a listing of many research studies and practice documents related to the use of telemental health.

Literature reviews examining the effects telemental health have shown that telemental health is effective for a range of psychological conditions and comparable in outcomes to in-person treatment. For example, telehealth is effective for numerous psychological conditions including depression, dementia, schizophrenia, suicide prevention, post-traumatic stress, panic disorders, substance abuse, eating disorders. Also, it’s both effective and comparable to in-person treatment with a range of client groups including adults, children, and geriatric groups in a variety of settings (e.g., emergency, home health). Telemental health is beneficial especially for clients with reduced access to in-person care due to transportation constraints or medical or mobility issues; it also holds promise for clients in under-developed communities and nations.
